The Biodegradation of Dispersed Oil Does Not Induce Toxicity

چکیده
ABSTRACT The acute toxicity of dispersed oil is well understood, and dilutes to levels below those concern within hours dispersion whether by waves or lower energy turbulence in the presence chemical dispersants. Once dispersed, hydrocarbon components spilled are degraded promptly native microbes seawater, typically with an apparent half-life 7–30 days even under Arctic conditions. Nevertheless, has been raised that this biodegradation might increase oil's generating releasing toxic by-products. We show here, using Americamysis bahia as test species, does not occur when present at environmentally-relevant concentrations (initially 3 ppm Corexit 9500 a dispersant ratio 1:20). guidelines for mandate temperature 26 ± 1C, rather warmer than collection seawater from New Jersey shore we used our experimental medium, so it surprising was especially rapid loss detectable hydrocarbons approximately 4 days. conducted sequential 4-day tests 20 days, which time indigenous microorganisms had removed almost 80% lightly weathered crude oil. saw no mortality any five tests.

Biodegradation of Dispersed Oil in Arctic Seawater at -1°C
As offshore oil and gas exploration expands in the Arctic, it is important to expand the scientific understanding of arctic ecology and environmental impact to mitigate operational risks. Understanding the fate of oil in arctic seawater is a key factor for consideration. Here we report the chemical loss due to the biodegradation of Alaska North Slope (ANS) crude oil that would occur in the wate...
متن کاملPretreatment with Pyridostigmine Bromide Does not Induce Cellular Toxicity
Soldiers are exposed to multiple stress conditions adverse psychological, physico-chemical and environmental conditions during warfare which can result in significant physical and chemical alterations in the biological system. The effects of carbamate (pyridostigmine bromide, PB) pretreatment prior to physiological stress and organophosphorous compound, DFP (diisopropylfluorophosphate) exposure...
متن کاملAMP does not induce torpor.
Torpor, a state characterized by a well-orchestrated reduction of metabolic rate and body temperature (T(b)), is employed for energetic savings by organisms throughout the animal kingdom. The nucleotide AMP has recently been purported to be a primary regulator of torpor in mice, as circulating AMP is elevated in the fasted state, and administration of AMP causes severe hypothermia. However, we ...
متن کاملEffects of Three Types of Oil Dispersants on Biodegradation of Dispersed Crude Oil in Water Surrounding Two Persian Gulf Provinces
OBJECTIVE To determine the most effective and biodegradable dispersant of spilled oil in water surrounding two Persian Gulf provinces. METHODS This study compared the effects of three dispersants, Pars 1, Pars 2, and Gamlen OD4000 on removal of oil in two Persian Gulf provinces' water. Overall, 16 stations were selected. Using the Well method, the growth rate of isolated bacteria and fungi wa...
